Beside it sat a photograph of me leaving Northstar three days earlier.

Someone had been inside the unit recently.

“Federal agents,” she called. “Identify yourself.”

Daniel checked behind the shelves.

A laptop sat open on the workbench.

Its screen displayed a video file.

Agent Ortiz stopped me before I touched it.

A technician examined the laptop for explosives, remote triggers, and active connections.

He disconnected it from all networks.

A narrow scar beside his mouth.

He sat in front of a dark wall, his face partially shadowed.

“My name is Owen Bell,” he said. “Walter Bellweather was my father.”

Agent Ortiz moved a chair behind me.

“You were never told about me because Walter believed distance would keep me safe. He was wrong.”

My father stood beside a young woman holding a baby.

“I am not asking you to trust me. I am asking you to verify everything.”

Familiar in a way that frightened me.

The precise pause before an important sentence.

“I worked for Victor Lang for fourteen years,” Owen said. “I helped build the private intelligence network he used to control executives, judges, physicians, and investors. I collected the evidence Victor used against Ethan. I helped monitor Walter.”

“When Walter discovered I was alive, he tried to bring me out. Victor stopped him. I did not know Victor intended to kill him until it was too late.”

My hands closed around the arms of the chair.

“I have spent nine years collecting proof,” Owen said. “Not because I am brave. Because I am guilty.”

He placed a flash drive on the table in the video.

“The evidence in Unit 317 will expose Victor’s financial crimes, the sabotage at Northstar, and the operation that caused Walter’s crash. But Victor expected you to find it.”

Agent Ortiz leaned toward the screen.

“He has been guiding you here,” Owen said. “The anonymous messages were mine, but the storage letter was not.”

A cold sensation traveled down my spine.

“My father wrote the address.”

“No,” Owen said as if he could hear my thought. “Walter wrote a different location in the original letter. Victor replaced the second page before the folder was hidden.”

The technician reached for the laptop.

Jordan stood at the main table speaking to Maya.

Mrs. Alvarez carried a tray from the kitchen.

The camera angle came from inside the building.

A black SUV waited across the street.

Owen’s recorded voice continued over the images.

“If you are watching this, Victor knows you opened the unit. He will not come for the evidence first.”

The two men stepped onto the sidewalk outside Stonebridge.

The other reached beneath his coat.

“Claire,” she whispered. “Someone cut the power.”

Behind her voice, glass shattered.

On the laptop screen, the camera moved deeper into Stonebridge Works.

A third figure appeared in the darkened hallway.

Victor Lang looked directly into the hidden camera.

Owen’s final words filled the storage unit.

“He will go after the people you love, because that is how he made your father obey.”

Victor raised one hand toward the camera.

In it was my father’s blue bridge stamp.

Then the live feed went black.
